Get dressed before you go outside.

Oh sweet marmalade, please please please, it's 2009. I can't spend 2009 'tisking' under my breath.
Yesterday I had to go to various supermarkets to stock up on items we had eaten our way through. Schools are obviously still out, leading to a remarkable sludge of teenagers wandering aimlessly about. But wandering aimlessly about in PAJAMAS!
I'm telling you, it's beyond ridiculous. One girl stood at the magazine stand in pink stripped jammies, stuffed into fake Uggs that naturally had been worn to the point where the sole had slipped sideways and she was walking on the ankle part oh and a navy hoodie that was several sizes too large for her. This wouldn't really bother me if not for the fact that practically every other woman I saw was dressed the same way. Whatever about teenagers, everybody already knows they're daft, but grown women? In saggy PJ's and Ugg-esque boots?
I mean, I know I'm showing my age here, but is it that hard to put on a pair of jeans? I know I've probably said this before, but I hate the sloppiness. I do. I'm all for comfort at home and I was once caught in rabbit jammies back when I lived in town, but I didn't intend to wear them out, I needed milk and it was v. late and I've never done it since...well I just don't get it. Why do so many people- women- wear jammies and slippers around town? Is it a backlash against something? Does this happen in other parts of the country? Other countries? I never saw this kind of thing in Barcelona. It's so...unkempt!
I mean how difficult is it to get dressed? To throw on a pair of jeans and actual boots or shoes? That's not asking too much surely? Or maybe this is an age thing. Maybe that's it.
Call me old fashioned, but I'm still of the opinion that when you leave the house you should at least try to look as pulled together as possible. I don't know, maybe brush your hair, wear a coat, clean clothes. Change out of your PJs.
And yes I HAVE a meeting in town to day and YES the cold sore is painful and I'm cranky, and yes, I'll still wear actual clothes.
Grumble grumble,

but apart from that . . .

But why? Why? I don't get it. What is so radical about getting dressed?

Cannot leave the house without shower. Have you ever stood on a crowded Dart and had someone stand in front of you who hadn't washed their hair. It makes my stomach turn. Don't understand?? Why would you have a shower every morning and not wash your hair while you're there??

But why? Why?
pure unadulterated laziness I would guess.

Cate! Indeed! And Yack. But you're assuming they even bothered having a shower. I once stood behind a dude with dreadlocks all the way into town, trying really hard not to breath in. Dreadlocks are the Devil's smegma, matted up hair that's never washed, self cleaning my hole. VILE!

Unfortunately it happens here in the US as well, even here in highbrow Connecticut. You can frequently spot the jammie-clad, fake Uggly boot-wearing sloths headed into high fashion establishments such as Wal-Mart, presumably to replete their supply of formal wear.

I was equally appalled and aghast to see two teenage girls dressed in their PJs and requisite Ugg boots while in the local shop at 1pm in the afternoon, while I was in Cork over the Christmas.

I hate Ugg boots or Uggly boots as me and my darling sister call them. They are quite possibly the most horrid item of fashion wear I have ever clapped eyes on. The boys in Australia wear them, which to me screams "what the f*ck!!" but they think they are so feckin cool.
I will barely run out to my car and back inside in my jammies, even though I live in the back of beyond now, and no one would ever see me, but it's the thoughts of the shame that I would be enveloped in if anyone saw me...that might have something to do with my paisley dressing gown that I inherited from my granddad which I refuse to get rid of because I love it so much!

Yyyyyep. True in the Boston area as well. Horrid. Even spotted pajama bottoms once or twice at Fenway Park. AND once or twice, even men. I mean I know you don't dress up for a ballgame, but is it so hard to throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt? At least you'd have pockets!

Uggs are a pestilential form of footshit and jammies are just not clothes.

I have been known to go outside the house in my dressing gown and sandals, especially on very frosty mornings like today. It's refreshing and I am seen only by the wildlife. Possibly they take me for a latter-day, secular franciscan. It's the closest I get to wearing a kilt.

It breaks my heart that my 12-year-old niece asked for and received a pair of Uggs this Christmas. I simply can't understand why the trend hasn't passed.

I had a pair of ugg-esque boots before the trend of them started - honestly, I did. They were sooooooo comfortable and they didn't last long enough for the heel to wear sideways and stuff. The sole cracked and they began to smell - oh god do they SMELL!! The material is not meant for outdoor wear and it just stinks after a short while which is all I can think of when I see those kids.

I don't wash my hair every day. No sirry bob. I shower alright but there is not a chance in hell I'd wash my hair every day. I have very thick, wavy hair that is about half way down my back and it takes at least a day to dry once I do wash it! I wash my hair every second or third day otherwise it is just a mass of split ends and frizz.

What I don't get about these trends though - the ugg-boot-pj-brigade is this ...
They are wearing pj's, a sloppy ass jumper, sloppy boots and their hair is immaculate straight and painstakingly styled to look messy AND a face caked with make up and oodles of shiny jewellery. It's like they dress their face with make up and style their hair as if they are going to don a ball gown but then throw on pj's and uggs!
INSANE!

When I was in university it was all the rage to wear those PJ bottoms to class in the morning. I never did it because it seemed like self-imposed infantilization. By the time I started teaching uni, the trend had turned to the hoochie mama clothes of low rise jeans and crop tops. If I had to choose, I'd prefer a class of women in jammies.

I can't recall having left the house in the last ten years without sunscreen, makeup, hair done, clothes arranged.

3:07 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

Indeed Medbh, it's just so lackadaisical. I think if I was teaching I'd insist they go home and get dressed before coming to my class, although I take your point about low riders and tail whales and all that jazz. Blee jazz. I've just got to stop saying that.

Ughs are just pointless wellies, soaking up the water and not repelling it, until you have 2 sodden sponges clinging to your pyjamas.

They do look like they would smell alright. I am not a great one for any sort of boot as I like my feet cold and not hot (yes weird but yes true) they just look really really sweaty. Like fleece PJ's. You would defo sweat like a mo-fo in them and they have to be a fire hazard at this stage no?

i did the pj's to class thing once or twice - generally after staying up too late studying, then waking up several minutes before class started. however, my pj's were running-esque pants, and so i don't think anyone really knew.

as for uggs, i see one real purpose... and that would be if you go to the gym very very early in the morning, i think they'd be good to traipse from house to car, then car to gym... and then stowed safely away until the next day. i also knew a girl who never wore them in public, but slipped them on to step outside to let the dog out...

Bab, NO! Don't disparage the fleece. Fleece had extremely good uses. Without I would surely have died of frostbite years ago.
Sam, they are, and bad for your arches.

Daisy Mae, she's quite right, but I hope she lets the dog out the rear of her house just to be on the safe side.

Oh FMC I am just so anti-fleece. Really I am. Especially when people wear them as (shudder) a fashion item.
I don't mind if its to go out walking etc, but not for sweaty PJ's (I get way too hot under the duvet for PJ bottoms even, its shorts all the way for me anyway) or when people ruin a lovely outfit with one. I am trying to wean my sister off them at the moment.
(*Note - I did wear a fleece at one point in my life, in my student "gaff" where we were so poor we had no money to turn the heat on most of the time, this is an exception to the rule!)

Fear not Babs, I wouldn't wear mine into town for lunch, but for a person sitting at a desk in winter it's a godsend. I know what you mean about heat though, I don't like my feet covered at night, no matter how cold. Toes must be free.

A friend of mine wears those rank fleece PJ's all the time, even in summer. I know it sounds insane given the current weather conditions, but I much rather be cool (as in temperature) than warm, non natural fibres make me feel horrible and also sort of irritate my skin somewhat, maybe that's why I am such a fleece nazi, hmm!

When I showed up for jury duty about a year ago, I saw a young girl walk into the waiting room in Sponge Bob jammie pants. Fortunately, we were all let go just a short time later, as a settlement had been reached. I ALMOST wish we had been called into the courtroom, just to see the look on the judge's face when she took the stand during voir dire....

The Irish Times magazine did a feature on the pajama wearing last year I think. Contrary to your belief that it is sloppiness and lack of showering, those in pajamas stated for the record that they do actually shower and then get dressed in clean, ironed pajamas. They feigned disgust at the thought that people might think they hadn't showered, washed their hair, brushed their hair, put on makeup and a coat before leaving the house. It's not necessarily sloppiness. Why they choose pajama legs rather than tracksuit bottoms I don't get.

1:07 p.m.
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh yes apparently they have "going out pyjamas" whatever that means. I have seen some of them wearing PJ's that I (once) owned, they are now never worn in case someone mistakes me for one of them. Yock!
