Motivation for fatcats and possibly for chumlies of Fatcats!

AHA! Let me welcome you to the motivation club. If you're new here I decided to set up a little place where we chumlies can set down what we did in terms of exercise this week. There's nothing behind it other than a chance to see in print how we're doing, to motivate ourselves to going that bit extra. If you want to join in feel free, don't be shy.

So Saturday is here and let's see how we're all doing. Did we pull our runners on? Walk that extra mile? Cycle harder faster longer? Brave the cold? Traffic? Ugh it's just so much harder in Winter. Also This week I learned the soggy leaves are treacherous.

Tuesday- I forced myself out the door, it was bloody cold I ran 10 k (badly) It took over an hour. I'd like to say it didn't but it did, I pretty sure it took and hour and a quarter which is utterly depressing. Did I mention it was cold?

Thursday- I went out again, it was dark- I poodled 8k, terrible. Also frightfully cold. I was supposed to go to the gym, somehow I managed not to. Bit disheartened at my lack of effort. Just didn't seem to have it mentally.

Sautrday! -Burning with shame at how pathetic my lazy arsed week was I pulled on my runners and did a hilly-ish 15k run. And lo! It was a good run, no aches, slow start, but kicked in after 3k and my return route was faster than I ever paced it. Not sure about time because I forget to check when I went out, but I was really booting it along-for me- on the last 2k. That's the way it goes sometimes, you can be crap all week and suddenly it clicks into place.

Next week I vow to utilise my gym more, even if I have to keep my own arse to get there.

Feeling great, feel good, how are you?

I also went out for a walk every night this week for about 40 mins, mostly to think about work, but also to loosen up my body after so many hours sitting in this chair. It's freezing and I enjoy gawking at every one's windows as I wander along. Yes I am that sort of freak.

I almost forgot but Medbh reminded me. Useful websites,

http://www.crossfit.com/- comprehensive no nonsense training updated daily. You can sub and adapt the exercises to suit your weight and ability. All exercises and 'names' of exercises are explained, take a day or two to read over it. Excellent site.

http://www.walkjogrun.net/ - absolutely brilliant site. I used it regularly when training for the marathon. You can map out any route you wish to take in your area, find the exact distance, save routes, alter them. Invaluable when you need to be precise and want to see exactly how much running you're doing.

Good luck.

Your motivation club was just what I needed to finally join the damn gym, FMC.
It's just under a two mile walk there so we went and took the tour and joined, had dinner, and walked home. Freezing. I had my face wrapped up in a cashmere scarf. We walked so briskly that I could feel it in the 'ol belly. I will lift weights for the first time in years on Monday.

Congratulations!
I must admit to loving weights and the feeling of getting stronger. just be prepared to ache the following day.
You might liek t take a gander at crossfit (http://www.crossfit.com/) I loosely follow it, adapting the weights to my ability, it's a terrific system and compliments any other training you might be doing. Also the give a pretty good comprehensive explanation of weights and exercises. My old instructor Memnoch considered it a good system and he pretty much scoffed at everything. There's a lot of core work and body weight work, which really shows up how weak we can be. I consider myself fairly strong, but I still can't do an extended pull up and that pisses me right off. Although I am getting closer-and I can kip it.
Congrats again.

I have suffered a rather strange injury to my hip no biggie though just no running for a week or two. Did a lot of rowing a swimming this week, haven’t done much rowing before but me liked it me liked it a lot. Went for a swim in the forty foot bright an early. If you need a running partner I will give you Floyd he is at his wits end, missing the running terribly he likes the swimming but they won’t let him into the Carlisle plus he lacks the opposable thumb so using the rowing machine would probably be a futile exercise anyway.

Well done with the rowing. I think it's a great way to push the body. I did 10K on the rowing machine the other week and my shoulders ached next day, and it also made my arse numb, ouch, but totally worth it.

Last week I had four fine days doing 5 min. walk, 3:30 run, 3 min walk, 8 min. run, 3 min. walk, 5 min. run. Sunday this week, I tried the same thing but was barely able to get to minute 5 of the 8-minute part; same on Tuesday and Wednesday. The muscles along my shins were hopelessly sore and tight, no matter how I stretched and did circles with my toes, and it was excruciating to try to push past it. What the crap?! I thought for a second my husband had left the treadmill on a steeper incline or something, but no. I just lost my ability to do an easy jog for a few minutes. Any ideas on why this would've happened all at once, besides a subconscious freakout over that commitment I made to the 10k on May 31?
Trying again today, would go outside but it's -4C here and I'm afraid I'd suffocate on my own snot.

Em it is you really feel it accross your chest I like that. Do you remember a while ago you went to some place in Bray for a proper pair of runners where was it I searched "Bray" (inventive I know) and it didn't return anything. I thought it was your blog. I got a good pair in NY but lets just say they need to be replaced.

I don't know what that is Grims, but it used to happen to me when I started out too, I'd get weird awkward days when I'd literally be all over the place and I was forever getting a stitch. The first time I ran 20 in the gym on the treadmill I was doing dandy until about 17.5/18k and then I suddenly lost the ability to run in a straight line and started to sort of take side to side steps, most odd. I think they're just little things we go through at the start as our bodies adapt to change and the pressure we put them under.
But well done on a productive week.

Hmm. I have a feeling I'm going to be the poorest shower at these Saturday meets.

I'm not joining the gym 'til after Christmas because I need a family membership so I can take the girls and therefore not be using them as an excuse not to go. But it's so flippin' expensive I can't justify it as anything other than a Christmas prezzie from himself.

This week was kind of screwed up because of Thanksgiving. We did take a long walk in the morning while the turkey was roasting. The girls' legs got tired so we carried them the last mile or so. I got the heavy one - 40lbs - because Dave's back's bad. He took the 30lber. Walking with a little over a third of your weight is not easy when your parcel is a s squirmy as mine was. Rightly or wrongly I considered that my workout for the day.

Then we ate about that weight each, except reversed, in rich food and wine and flopped around like dying sunfish for the rest of the day.

Friday, leftover day was much the same.

Monday Tuesday were poorish but not a total loss. The girls are home this week on Thanksgiving vacation so I am pretty well bound in terms of what I can do. I went up and down the stairs 20 times each day plus the normal running up and down them I do anyway. There are 17 steps and my thighs screamed at me - "STOP!" they screamed - and were all twitchy afterwards. Wednesday night I was helping out down at the restaurant.

That was me. Not a terrific week but better than if I hadn't been a Saturday chumlie.

Laziest girl in the world here. But in defence your honour, was taken out by office shift which generally renders a girl with a dodgy back incapable of much. However did thirty lengths on Wednesday, couldn't move on Thursday or Friday as felt like had been beaten in the back with a piece of four by two. So gently eased into it yesterday with only twenty. Today feeling chipper and heading back to pool. Very easy as is glorious sunny hot day here. And does half hour walk to work each day count ? (She asks, clutching at straws).

Laaughykate and Sam - you may well think you're lazy, but you got nothing on this fat rabbit.

Worked out last weekend, but NOTHING all week long because of the damn inner ear thing.

I'll report last weekend's workouts though. Saturday, 30 minute elliptical workout using the preset, so basically interval training. Starts at a low resistance, then goes up to 10, then back down low for the end. Then 20 lunges, 7 reps on the ab wheel, 15 minutes on the bike to cool down, then lunch.

Sunday - 45 minute interval training on the elliptical, leg lifts, 20 squats with 5 pound weights, then some tricep curls with 10 pound weights. As I remember it was about 30 each arm. (15 right, then 15 left, then back again...)

After that? Big fat nothing. Just back from visiting relatives for the holiday (ate starch and drank like a fish) and intend to get on the elliptical tomorrow for at least a half hour, then whatever weights, lunges, etc. I have time for.

Have decided lightheadedness this week was because I don't eat enough. So caloric intake will increase this week, and therefore workouts must also increase.

WE shall see!

Shamed by reading about you lot, I sent the girls into the garden so I'd get a bit of p and q, and did donkey kicks with 2lb weights on my ankles, 30 each side. Then side leg lifts x 20. Then 10 rather feeble push-ups. My upper body strength is pathetic. Then I had about 20 minutes fairly strenuous dancing with the girls to Blondie. They love Blondie! You can take your Wiggles and shove them up Barney's bum - Blondie's where the 5-year old groove is at! Anyway I feel better now I've shaken off some indolence. This motivation thing might actually be working for me! Cheers, ladies!

My back is near-shot from hauling the twins around, putting them into cars at awkward angles etc. and because I'm an idiot who hardly ever bothers to lift the proper way. I need to do something to strengthen the right back muscles so that when my back finally starts becoming a problem, there'll be some sort of ameliorating muscle there.

Any suggestions, folks? Do I need to join the gym for the right equipment to do that?

Blogger fatmammycat said...

Dunnbloodyyo, but I am so jealous you have an audience and back up dancers to Blondie. I spent a good five minutes eighties dancing- lots of arm waving and double steps- to Joy Division this evening. If I'm adding that to my weekly workout, surely swimming, elliptical and carrying heavy children about can be on the yay list.
Twenty to two here, just in. Was there rum? Oh yes. Plus I lost ten of my most favourite Euros to a casino. Bah!

An evil chest cold combined with Thanksgiving piggery had me laid up all week.I couldn't even pick the kids up without aches, pains, wheezes and general hacking up of lung tissue.

Being cooped up like this is driving me up the walls.

Not the most auspicious of starts I'm afraid.

7 to two here. Not bonkers but quite mellowly goofy-feeling. It's lovely.
Only beer for me tonight. It's all I can do these days without making a terrible arse of myself. With beer I just make an unmodified arse of myself.

Rum, eh? Well, I always suspected it but you're a better woman then me, my darling. I grow rubbisher weekly. I think its lack of concerted practice.

I think exercise might break me at the minute.

I went to the gym on Tuesday and Saturday for an hour and a half each session. Did ten minute sessions on each of the bike, elliptical trainer, treadmill and stepper, with loads of weights in between which I can't describe because I don't know what anything's called. Wednesday nothing hurt but yesterday everything hurt, especially my abs as the sadistic but very tasty trainer made me do reverse crunches on an inclined bench. And I couldn't finish the triceps ones because my arms just wouldn't move any more. In summary, pathetic.

I'm the only person in that bloody gym who turns purple at the slightest effort. Is that normal?

I'm a bit late here because I have been out of town since Friday, but I did get three workouts in last week, numerous dog walks, and maintained quite a healthy diet. I was very proud of myself. And then I squandered all that hard work by eating too much and drinking copious amounts of alcohol over the weekend. Ah well, I'll just start again...

Hi FMC, I'm late getting to this as was in the UK for a shopping trip at the weekend. It was so not worth it but the girls enjoyed it!
Anyway my week of training involved the usual mileage (running on roads)....but guess what?! You've inspired me to join a gym! Joined today and swam and swam! I'm goinna get a programme together on Wednesday and go from there....Really want to learn to swim efficiently and the other stuff will help with the running.

Well done on your 15k run, sounds like you were flying!
