Tattoos

I'm against them!
I dislike tattoos, I have always disliked tattoos. Living in Barcelona really turned me off them as every other person seems to have one.
I think tats are really ugly. That's just my personal opinion, but sometimes I can get my head around the thought that someone might get one done that REALLY REALLY means something to them. However I reserve my outright disgust for those tats that mean nothing at all to the person wearing them. I think celtic bands look ridiculous, I think designs on the base of the spines are common and completely unoriginal and I super hated all those tattoos everyone got around their belly buttons years ago. Bleaugh. A friend of mine had one done, then she got pregnant a few years later, you don't even want to know what her 'Eastern Sun' looks like now. Tattoos that cover the whole arm like sleeves are gross, and if you get a tattoo on your neck or hands...well, you're an idiot.
I don't like to see ink on anyone, men and women alike, but I especially hate to see ink on teenagers. I also think tattoo parlours shouldn't tattoo anyone under the age of 21. Teenagers are notorious for changing their minds every other week. Witness the Little Goth Kid, now more The Little Sk8tor Kid, next week she might be The Little Emo Kid, who can say.
Yesterday on a 15 to Rathmines two boys got on the bus as Ternure. Both wore sleeveless tops-despite the rain- both had near identical MASSIVE tattoos of squiggly crap all over their pale under developed deltoids. These young lads can't have been any more that sixteen or seventeen.
If I was their mother I would be most unhappy.
Many many years ago I worked with a gal who was covered in tats- including two on her upper breasts. She had gotten them done as a youth and was in the process of getting them removed when I met her. Man the pain that girl went through, and the bloody expense. But that's the thing about tats, it's not like a piercing where you can just remove the offending article should you change your mind. It's not like getting a dramatic haircut or dye job that you can alter. It's pretty permanent unless you are willing to go through the discomfort and cost of having then removed.
Tattoos, I'm against them!! (but do what you want)

The only tattoos worth looking at were Robert Mitchum's in Night of the Hunter.

'Tramp stamp' tattoos on the rump, just above the thong, are not worth looking at at all. I never notice them. Honest.

I thank my lucky stars for my sensitive skin, which spared me from getting tattoos in my early twenties. My hair recovered from the purple, magenta, blue, and black. But I would still be dealing with my bad taste had I gotten a tattoo.

Depending on the tattoo, I quite like them. I haven't got any of myself though, nor do I have any piercings... pure as snow, eh ;)
I agree that there should be an age limit - and that the person should be sober when doing it!

Don't worry, you won't see mine unless we get fairly personal, hahaha.

You just called Josh Homme an idiot. You and I are soooo finished, Ms. Pudgyfurr.

I love tats. Love 'em. Don't have any, though, coz there's no particular place I'd like one.

I'm mostly with the FatCat on this one. I even did a long post about this sort of thing a while back. People who just get a tat to have one, and just pick any old cartoon off the wall of the tatto parlor are absolute twats. I think if you MUST have a tat, it should mean something significant, and you should KNOW what it means and its significance, and should be someplace where you can cover it up or show it at will - NOT on the neck, forearm, face (unless you're a Maori), lower back (there's a reason it's called a "tramp stamp")...piercings are stupid too, but at least they don't cause permanent harm, unless EGAD it gets infected - and how does one blow one's nose with a nose ring, eh? Answer me THAT. Vile.

And the ink can be POISONOUS, for the love of Salma.

It's not original anymore - and people should just cut the shit with that.

You've just reminded me of a gal I know who had a nose stud back in the day and had it ripped from her nose by the whipping hair of some other gal at a concert. Studs are not mosh safe or so it seems.
Also, never get one a tat on your forearm if you have any intention of growing old. Nothing looks more minging that a forearm tat on an old dude with old skinny arms.

No, really Missus. I never notice them peeking at the world from the, you know, deepening shadows.

Right on. They are so unattractive. When I see people like Angelina Jolie dressed in a gown I look at the tats and say "stop writing on yourself!" She looks like a pretty mental patient.
When EVERYONE has a tattoo they are no longer edgy or alternative.

I know, I know! I confess. I'll have to get one on the palm of my hand, then I can simulate the effect any time I like... imagine it through tumbler of gin and tonic... or emerging behind a pint glass... or... or...

i actually have a few tats, and i really like them. each of them mean something different to me, and they're all original, not picked off the wall. one was hand drawn by a friend from school, and another was drawn by my husband. i agree about tramp stamps! no ink above my ass, thank you. all are hidden, but i don't have to strip naked to show them if i want. and here in the USA, you have to be 18 (voting age) and if you go to even a halfway reputable artist in a salon, they will not ink you if they even smell alcohol. there are very strict regulations controlling tattoo art, same as a hospital.

If they mean something to you, huzzah. I can sort of understand that. I will still do the nose wrinkling thing but I won't be all up in your grill and brushing imaginary dirt off my shoulder.
If you went in and said, 'um, I totally think the dolphin/cherry/celtic cross/barbed wire something or other is totally um cute,' then not huzzah. In fact, fie.

Well a friend of mine has his sisters name on his arm, She died young and I can understand that but I agree most are stupid and will be regretted later in Life.

Seriously if you want one get a henna and then you at least can change it with the fashion. Remember skin once flat and smooth will eventually be wrinkly.

Dolphins leap eternally around the ankles of just about every 3rd teenage girl you meet out here. Occasionally they crest for air above the jeans too.

Dolphins are about as edgy as Kansas. Celtic bands just make you look like an arse.

A friend of mine had a little line tattood above her eyelashes, and in her eyebrows - so she can have make-up free holidays. Looks OK. She is now planning to have her upper lipline tattooed for emphasis. She also has a tiny bluebird above her ankle. She's as mad as a bag of snakes and has obviously got a high pain threshold.

Oh God, here goes, I can't believe I am about to admit this. I have a Dolphin on my left shoulder. OK, background, I was really hungover and had just split up with my live in girlfriend of 4 years. No excuse really. That said I would never get rid of it, although I have thought of getting it tattooed over, it reminds me of a certain time of my life.I also have a tiny nose stud, which despite my position in a big corporation, I never take out. I like my job, but it reminds me that I am much more than this job.

In general I like tattoo's but it depends on the tattoo, and the quality of the tattoo artist. I agree tat's over the butt are cheesy. As are Dolphins! What the fuck as I thinking.

Best one I have seen, my friend Patrick plays in a hardcore punk bad and has a Gretsch hollow body guitar, he has the f-holes from the guitar tattoed full size on the underside of his arms. The band is also called F-Hole.

I've one of two Celtic birdies on my left shoulder done many years ago and I've never regretted it.It was to be the start of a rather ambitious body art project that I've not entirely shelved yet.

My mate Frenchie has some serious ink from her time the Navy stationed her in Japan and it has to be seen to be believed.Come to think of it you WILL see it in September.

Miss Queen, I'm fairly certain you wouldn't get something unless it meant a whole lot to you.
Gadzooks, a dolphin. Well, I suppose it could have been worse, you could have got her name tattooed over your heart or had a broken heart tattooed to your bicep.
Yikes.

I know, I know. It was a total impulse thing - and I have been a swimmer most of my life, so it kinda fit with that - I was also a bit of a hippy at the time. AND tattoos were not very popular back then, so it wasn't as much of a cliche. Still..

When I got my nose pierced I did it because I didn't know anyone male who had ione. I seem to have had a knack for anticipating body adornments that would become cliched. That said I still love my nose stud, although I never think about it.

I have a couple, on my upper arms where they can be kept covered in polite company. I didn't rush my decision, however, and took several years working out what I wanted, just to be sure I wasn't going to have regrets. It was tough to make a decision as, like you, I find celtic bands very tacky, and as I am neither Maori nor Chinese I didn't feel that symbolism from either culture meant anything at all to me. In the end I did go back to celtic designs (NOT a band!) and created something myself which I felt represented me.

I also have a pierced nipple, which was a true impulse purchase. But then I can always remove that.

May I simply say what a comfort to discover a person that truly
understands what they're talking about over the internet. You definitely understand how to bring an issue to light and make it important. A lot more people must read this and understand this side of your story. I can't believe you're not more popular because you certainly possess the gift.
