Cry cry, run run.

Urgh. Remember that scene from Full Metal Jacket, you know, where the poor fat bloke gets set upon by his fellow cadets and they pummel him with bars of soup wrapped in towels. Remember? Remember he cried? He said something like 'uuhhuuhhhhhoooowwwwwhhhuuuhh.'
Fortunately Vincent went on to be all smart and jerky moving in Law and Order Criminal intent. No pounding there, he gets to be the table slapper.
Indeed.
THe BUPA run in on April 15th, and I am in it. It is my very first ever offical race and I don't want to shame myself by coming in over the finishing line the following morning. It is only 10K- the more runnery among you may wander off now, make coffee and laugh at me- but 10k it is and I want to do it in under an hour.
So, despite my snot filled head, I am back in training.
Yesterday I did 10k in one hour 12 minutes. I wasn't over impressed but it's not terribly shabby considering my current state and with Finn's superb help and staggering patience for answering stupid questions I am now about to start doing something called 'interval' training, so that I can hopefully shave off that pesky extra 12 minutes.
Right.
However I got up this morning and it would appear someone pulled the soap in a towel trick on my slumbering corpse like self.
I have questioned the Paramour most carefully and he swears blind he had no part in it. So I deduce it is the result of yesterday's effort. It's a right rum one, the pain is not in my legs at all, although the shins are a tuch twingy, my knee is holding up nicely, thanks to my new and fabulous trainers. No, the pain is in my arms and shoulders.
BIzzare.
Anyhoo, it's Sonia O'Sullivan's last road race too, so there's a bit of history in the making. All the money raised is going to charity and I'm really looking forward to it.
Which makes me wonder about getting older.
Happy Friday y'all, it's the portal to the weekend.

You better come up with a better offer than that.

Just do what you can, then push it a tiny bit more, then stop. I usually train on my own, because I've felt like a spa any time I've gone running with others. Them trotting along and chatting while they ran, me heaving and barely able to catch my breath, using hand signals to communicate because there's no bloody way I can talk and run at the same time.

Hi FMC, if you're doing 72 minutes while you're unwell you will do fine on the day of the race. Just look after yourself, take it easy for now and enjoy some shorter runs also to build up the speed and stamina. (I get sore arms and ribs after long runs too). There are lots of Meet and Train groups now for the Women's Mini Marathon, Evening Herald on Thursdays has details.
I've never done interval training, sounds good, might give it a go sometime.
Not sure if it is Sonia's last race. Thought that may be a publicity stunt on the part of BUPA. Can't see her giving up for a while.

The fuckers! They've been saying it nonstop over the radio that it is to be her last.
I'm glad you mentioned the aching arms and ribs thing, I thought 'oh boy I'm a wreak' this morning when I rolled/fallumphed out of bed.

Ah watch these twingey shins. I used t do cross-country which is more just ungainly running about than proper running I got shin-splints a couple of times and they slow you down and take ages to heal.

Kudos to you, out there with your snot battling your 12 minutes. You have a strong heart and true, baby.

ah fmc, interval training will do wonders.

as for the shoulders and ribs, try relaxing while you run, and take deep breaths (sometimes referred to as belly breathing vs. chest breathing...... unfortunately i can't come up with a better way to describe it).

you'll do fine, just fine. remember, you're supposed to do this because you want to, and because it'll be fun! (runners are a good lot, and there's generally food and finishing medals at the end of the race).

Snarf. I don't know about that Sam, but I do have the arms and chest of and eighty year old today.
What ho! Off to Marks and Sparks I go for nibbly things. Golly I do love a good Friday.

Jmae, we crossed, I DO enjoy it, it's bizzare. As I"ve probably said more than once, I'm not exactly a natural runner, but lately I've started to enjoy it more and more. I don't know what to make if it all. I've even started babbling about it to other folk with the strange zeal that I normally reserve for Havana 7.
I'm giving the legs a good rest today, but I intend to try out this interval training tomorrow afternoon. Nothing dramatic, but a Finn inspired 1k at 6min, 3 mins slow recovery jog and repeat to fade, or thrice more.

I did the Beirut 10k in 1hour 23 but I was walking as I get very bad shin splints. If you can do 72 mins while sick you should have no problem , you need to be running 10 minute mile pace.
Just pretend every parked car could blow up.

Some day, I hope to do 10K in an hour. In my dreams, that is. My boobs would never allow it.

I admire you FMC. I have nary a sniffle and I've been avoiding even my elliptical machine like it's Tom Cruise or something.

Macdara, snarf, that would put some pep in my step to be sure.
Andraste, you're absolutely right, if you're very busty it must be hellish. I've got a sports bra however that lock the puppies into place. I've seen loads of women running with what appears to be toilet tissue for bras, I just don't get it, how can that not be sore?

FMC,
72 mins is a fine time and you're only going to get better.Interval training is really good as it conditions your body to 'explosive' use and recovery.I'm putting that badly but you're a clever feline and will understand. In time the recovery intervals will get shorter and shorter and you'll put together an impressive time.My PB for 10k was 48mins and I'd happily commit murder to get that back.

As for relaxing the bod? I know it sounds mad but start with relaxing your jaw.So many people equate determination with locking the jaw in a death grimace. Not good. It's all connected and a rigid jaw WILL tax your neck, shoulders, arms and so on.
Warm up,loosen up and relaaaax. You're going to be grand altogether.

I once ran a pub quiz in 1 hour 50 minutes. I hit the wall at 1 hour 10 and began to run out of questions, but I got there in the end.

Keep 'er lit, FMC. You can do it.

48 mins miss Queen? Sheet, yuou must have been flying along. I'm decidedly jealous. Do you still run?
Primal har, there is no wall, only the limits of our mind. Unless you ran into an actual wall, I guessing you weren't supping mineral water while doing this champion pup quizz run.

I'm getting a little auld for that kind of running (at least my knees are) but I still run a bit.I've switched to the bike now and do the odd century every now and again.
Bit of a cycling anorak truth be told.
Mind what I said.Relax the jaw and your 48 mins (or better)will come.

Great blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?

I'm hoping to start my own blog soon but I'm a little lost on everything.

Would you propose starting with a free platform like Wordpress or
go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I'm totally overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Kudos!

You could fumble around for literally months until you figured out the "key" to getting
loads of Twitter followers and in that time, your competitors could easily get a better foothold than you in your area of business -- whatever
that may be. They even offer a $10 discount sometimes,
which is a hefty sum, from the regular price, via coupon codes.
In this brief post I'm heading to be sharing with you anything I know about this topic, as nicely as the greatest areas to get what you're searching for.
